Basketball Buzz: Week Three

(Youth1 Basketball) - In an AAU basketball program, there are usually a handful of players who stand out. One such athlete amongst the 196 in the Amoney Sportz program is sixth-grader Jake Betlow.

Betlow (below), from Mendham, NJ, plays on the seventh-grade team, and utilizes his strengths of ball handling and jump shooting to impress coaches and opposing teams.

The point guard, who was named one of the top middle school players at the Hoop Group Invitational, has grown as a player in the AMoney system resulting from some of the core principles Marc Adler and his staff have enforced throughout their 17 teams.

"I've been taught to keep low on my moves and to do them quick," Betlow said. "Our defense is very high pressured and all over the place. We get a lot of steals."

That comes as no surprise if you ask Adler, who said he likes to coach how he played. "If you play solid defense in the full-court, it usually leads to steals and quick points."

Along with defensive pressure, jump shooting has indirectly had a role in forming the AMoney Sportz program.

The phrase "that's money" is used during basketball competition throughout the world. The meaning has nothing to do with the dollar, euro, rupee, or peso; instead, it's a declaration of an incoming pure jump shot.

During his playing days, Marc Adler would frequently hear his coach use the term. Not before long, he was given the nickname "Money." Over the years, the "A" from Adler got attached to form "AMoney." He always dreamed of linking his name to something in the basketball world, and in 2008, it was made a reality.

Based out of Whippany, NJ, AMoney Sportz has grown from 2 teams with 17 kids into today's size almost solely by word-of-mouth. The program is the home to teams ranging from fourth-grade to high school. While boy's teams make up the majority, there are multiple levels for girls as well.

So there are numerous teams, co-ed opportunities, and different skill levels for each grade. You may be asking yourself, what makes this different from just about every other AAU program in the country?

"We're a family atmosphere, everybody's involved. That's how we've separated ourselves from other programs," Adler said.

Patterson, AMoney All-Starz Bankrupt Rebels

(Youth1 Basketball) - Wayne Patterson is getting used to opposing coaches question his age, but the coaches may have a good reason why. Patterson (right) doesn't look, or play, like a typical eighth-grader. The guard/forward from Dover, NJ scored 32 points to lead the AMoney All-Starz to a convincing 67-38 win over the Rebels today at Hoop Heaven in Whippany, NJ.

"It's not the first time. They normally say my physique is different- people don't even think I'm a freshman," Patterson said.

A multi-sport star, Patterson was recruited by then-Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano while he was a seventh-grader. Despite his two-sport prowess, Patterson does not get overwhelmed with his commitments. He credits his father for "keeping him on a tight schedule."

"He's a special athlete," said head coach Marc Adler. "And he's also a team player."

A subject of a Youth1 football article, Patterson joined the AMoney All-Starz after their first game of the season which was a one-point game between these two teams. His friend turned teammate, Derrien Coley, gave him a call and invited him to join the team.

"Within two practices he (Patterson) caught on pretty easily," Adler said.

From the jump, the AMoney full-court press was too suffocating and persistent for the Rebels.

"My style has always been up-tempo," Adler said. "I've always coached the way I like to play."

Jayson Coppola added eight points and tremendous size in the interior, and Devin Bratton scored six for the All-Starz. While Patterson was the main difference in the second meeting, Adler did make some adjustments for the rematch.

"We went over in practice who their shooters were so we could matchup in transition. I thought we did a nice job of that," Adler said.

AMoney All-Starz Striking Gold

(Youth1 Basketball) - The eighth-grade AMoney All-Starz White Team is off to a fast start to their fall season. The boys from New Jersey are currently undefeated after five games.

"This team's core group has now been together for about three years and six seasons, adding and losing players each fall or spring season due to football and baseball conflicts," head coach Marc Adler said. "They have a great group and really gel on and off the court."

In their first league game of the season, the All-Starz escaped with a one-point victory at the buzzer. They went on to go unbeaten in three games at the Hoops Blast Basketball Tournament in Bergen County to take home the title. The championship game of the tournament was an intense battle with PBA (Patterson, NJ) that the AMoney team took by six points. The same weekend, the 8th graders improved to 2-0 in league play with an eight-point victory.

The leading scorers are Wayne Patterson, Derrien Coley, and Jayson Coppola. Patterson is a special athlete who is uncontainable 1-on-1, Coley creates golden scoring opportunities for his teammates, and Coppola is a 6'4" center with tremendous leaping ability, according to Adler. He also cites guards Justin Polesuk and Jake Barbiere as solidifying the backcourt and providing stability.

Players are from all around the Garden State- like Randolph, Mendham, Morristown, Wharton, Millburn, Morris Plains, and Long Valley.
